Julius Jungheim was born in Düsseldorf on 24 April 1878 and died there on 27 December 1957. He was a German landscape painter who belonged to the Düsseldorf school of painting.
His father and landscape painter Carl Jungheim (1830-1886) was already a member of the Düsseldorf School of Painting and had been a member of the Malkasten artists' association since its foundation in 1848.
Julius Jungheim studied at the Royal Prussian Academy of Art in Düsseldorf under the landscape and animal painter Julius Bergmann, in Antwerp under Albert De Vriendt and at the Royal Academy of Arts in Berlin under the landscape painters Eugen Bracht and Friedrich Kallmorgen. Jungheim was a member of the Malkasten artists' association from 1904 to 1910. From 1904, he exhibited at the Great Berlin Art Exhibition and the Munich Annual Exhibition in the Glaspalast. He was a member of the Sonderbund founded in Düsseldorf in 1909.
Jungheim mainly painted landscape motifs from the Lower Rhine and Westphalia. He represented a colourful, vibrant palette. As early as 1910, he developed a neo-impressionist style. His painting style is characterised by impasto brushwork, which builds up the picture in a constructive interaction. His individuality was characterised by the fact that the dabs of colour applied in impasto brushstrokes do not dissolve the surface, but rather build up the picture in a constructive interaction. Individual colour and structurally differentiated, surface-related segments of the picture appear to be developed to the point of abstraction, yet in their mutual interplay they create landscape-like depths. Jungheim, whose art was rejected even by the innovative Sonderbund painters, but who did not follow any further stylistic developments until his death, is counted among the painters who broke through the traditional framework of Düsseldorf art in favour of new developments.
