ARTIST:
Donat Hübschmann
Donat Hübschmann was born about 1540 in Leipzig, he worked as engraver and printer and died in Vienna in 1583. Literature: Thieme/Becker.

DESCRIPTION:
The larger illustration of the two gouache paintings, an allegory for harmony, shows 4 brothers surrounding a fire altar with natural background. Above the main scenery a crowned heard with the slogan "Cor vnum & anima vna" is hovering. the altar shows the inscriptions "Sine dolo & fraude" and "Ecce quam bonum & quam incundum habitare fratres in vnum Psalm. 32". One of the brothers leans his hand on a root bundle. In the left background  a temple is illustrated and the inscription "Ex concordia, victoria" can be seen, in contrast its ruin and the inscription "Ex discordia, exitium" can be seen in the right background. Above the whole scenery there is the Trinity with the slogan "Vnitas in trinitate & in vnitate trinitas". At the upper margin stands the headline "Coelestivm conversationi similima". Below the painting there is a Latin poem in 18 lines: "Indicat hic alijs exempla priora figuris, Herbersteinia dum quod cor durarit ad aras ...".

The painting verso shows a romantic mountain scenery with castle and seaport in the background. The main illustration builds King Geryon with 3 faces, 3 pairs of arms and 2 pairs of legs. In the right arms he wears a sword, a lance and a scepter. The left arms rest on an upstanding buckler. As example Hübschmann probably used the emblemata No. 40 by Alciatus. Below the gouache painting there are two tables with text, on the left side a legend in 10 lines, beginning with "Concordia insuperabilis ..." and on the right side German poem in 8 lines with the headline "Ainigkait Vnüberwindtlich". A stone beside the illustration shows the year 1575 and the monogram of Hübschmann DH (Nagler 1123).

In 1559/60 Hübschmann already illustrated the autobiography of the Austrian voyager and minister Sigmund von Herberstein. The four brothers maybe however the sons of Emperor Maximilian II (in 1571 Hübschmann portrayed them).
