Medieval vellum leaf from a Flemish Book of Hours with two very fine miniature paintings. The leaf shows recto Saint Claire of Assisi and verso Saint Helena. From Bruges/ Flanders, about 1455-1460.
DESCRIPTION:
This extraordinary vellum leaf originates from a Flemish Book of Hours and is decorated with two 2 medieval miniature paintings in gold and colours. The front page shows Saint Claire of Assisi, the back shows Saint Helena.
The vellum leaf contains on each side 17/18 lines in Latin, written in brown gothic letters with red accentuations. Each text field contains a two-line initial in gold on red/blue ground. The text is surrounded by a three-quarter floral border in gold and colours.
