DESCRIPTION:
Very interesting and early French drawing of the 17th century. The drawing is made of black pencil, Pen-and-ink-drawing in brown, brown wash, heightened in white and shows a scene of the classical antiquity.
France of the seventeenth century had a big influence to the European monopolization of language, the conventions on court and literature and art. Especially in literature the ideal of the ancient Greece and Rome exerted a great influence.
The drawing shows a young woman leaning against a male figure with laurel wreath. In the background there is a fourth figure with laurel wreath. Especially the apparel of the figures and the room setup reminds of the classical antiquity. Maybe the scene means Andromache fainting.
The colouring is basically in green and blue, details are carved out by effects of light and shadow. There is also a passepartout, but still not fixed.
