ENGRAVER:
Johann Elias Ridinger (1698 - 1767) was a German engraver, whose main subject was the illustration of animals. His talent for drawing was apparent from an early age and he enhanced his knowledge and skills under Christian Resch and Johann Falch, his passion for animals he discovered at the court of Graf Metternich. In Ausgsburg Ridingern foundet his own publishing house, which was continued by his sons after his death.

The copper engraving shows five lions in a landscape, a big one in the foreground and four in a group in the background, the illustration is very detailed and naturalistic, below the illustration a general desciption of the lion, the copper engraving is fixed on cardboard.
