KARTOGRAPH:
Johann Baptist Homann (* March 20, 1664 in Oberkammlach, today part of Kammlach in the district of Unterallgäu; † July 1, 1724 in Nuremberg) was a German cartographer, publisher and engraver.
Johann Baptist Homann was born in Oberkammlach, Allgäu in 1664. He founded his publishing house in Nuremberg in 1702. For a long time, the map business was mainly in the hands of the Dutch, but Homann's publishing house became so successful that it rose to become the most important house for the production of maps and atlases in Germany. After Homann published his first atlas in 1707, he became a member of the Academy of Sciences in Berlin. After his death in 1724, the business was continued by his son Johann Christoph. After his death in Nuremberg in 1730, the business continued under the name Homann Erben until the 19th century.
