DESCRIPTION:
Bronze statuette of Dionysus, so-called "Narcissus", greenish golden patina. Copy after the original.
Dionysus, called Narcissus, is an ancient Roman bronze statuette, created between the 1st century BC and the 1st century AD. The statuette was found in 1862 during excavations in Pompeii. It is assumed that the statuette is a Roman copy of an ancient Greek original from the 4th century BC.
It depicts a naked, slender, pensive young man standing in a contrapposto position and crowned with a vine tendril. A goatskin is draped over his left shoulder and he is wearing sandals on his feet. Originally identified as a statue of the mythical beautiful Narcissus, the statuette was later interpreted as an image of the god Dionysus. At the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century, it enjoyed great popularity and was copied many times.
The original statuette is kept in the National Archaeological Museum of Naples.
