AUTHOR:

Jean-Louis Petit (1674 - 1750) was a French surgeon, and the inventor of the tourniquet. He was first enthusiastic about anatomy, received a master's certificate in surgery in Paris in 1700. He became a member of the French Royal Academy of Sciences in 1715, and was named director of the French Royal Academy of Surgery by the king when it was created in 1731. He acquired great notoriety because of his skill and experience, thanks to his case reports of hemorrhage, lacrimal fistula, operation on the frenum, for his treatise on bone diseases and especially for his general treatise on surgical operations, on which he worked 12 years and which was finished after his death by François-Dominique Lesne.

DESCRIPTION:
Work about bone diseases in two volumes, 'Traité des Maladies des Os', by Jean-Louis Petit, published by Guillaume Cavelier in Paris 1741.  A valuable work by the leading French surgeon of his time and the first director of the Academie de Chirurgie in Paris. Jean Luis Petit is best remembered for his work on bone diseases. He gave the first description of osteomalacie, and was the first to open the mastoid process. Petit invented the screw tourniquet, which was according to Owen H. Wangensteen "certainly one of the most important discoveries before the advent of anaesthesia". He also was the first to describe rupture of the Achilles tendon and of clot formation in arteries following ligation. Several anatomical structures are named after him. Petit was the first to refuse to take an oath acknowledging the supremacy of medicine over surgery, a humiliating formality, not abolishing until 1750.
